As we near Thanksgiving and I search my heart for the things I am thankful for, I am reminded of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, which says “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Working as a Direct Care Coach at Wings of Refuge, I am in constant awe of what God does with the seemingly impossible. My own faith has increased exponentially; not only has this experience gotten me out of my comfort zone, but it has allowed me to see the fruit of submitting humbly to the Lord. I’m seeing what it looks like to rely on the Holy Spirit every shift - sometimes multiple times a shift - to make decisions that are best for the participants and the home. I am truly grateful to be able to partner with God in this ministry, walking alongside participants, and seeing lives being transformed.
My favorite moments are when the participants and I get to study the Bible together or go through a devotional. It brings me great joy to witness the lightbulb moments when a connection is made between what was read and how that applies practically to her life. Her demeanor and facial expression changes almost in an instant to a sense of relief, hope, and perhaps an inner rejoicing that comes from hearing and reading truth. That one moment of rejoicing is often the beautiful first step toward the end goal of rejoicing always, praying without ceasing, and giving thanks in all circumstances. It’s evidence of the transformation that is slowly taking place each day at Wings of Refuge and we thank God for His redemption!
